What is a karoos (bouncelands) cycle?

Karoos — also called bounce lands or Ravnica bouncelands — are 10 nonbasic dual lands originally from the Ravnica: City of Guilds block (2005-2006). Each ETBs tapped, then forces you to return another land you control to your hand. The downside is real (a tempo loss and a land you have to replay), but the upside is significant in Commander: each karoo essentially replaces one land slot with two lands’ worth of mana production, triggers landfall twice, and lets you rebuy an ETB effect like Bojuka Bog. They’re a Commander staple in budget builds, lands-matter decks (Lord Windgrace, Omnath, The Gitrog Monster), and any deck running landfall payoffs like Avenger of Zendikar or Field of the Dead. The "Karoo" name comes from the Visions card Karoo (1997), which had the same mechanic; "bounce land" describes the ETB behavior.

Players also call them bounce lands, Ravnica bouncelands. All names refer to the same 10 cards.

The cycle debuted in RAV.

Are karoos the same as bounce lands?
Yes — "karoos" is the older nickname (from Karoo, a Visions card), while "bounce lands" describes their ETB behavior. The 10-card Ravnica cycle is called both interchangeably.
Why are karoos played in Commander?
They count as ramp because returning a land you control re-triggers landfall effects and lets you replay an ETB-effect land (Bojuka Bog, Ghost Quarter) for a powerful trigger. In dedicated lands decks every karoo is 1 ramp + 1 trigger.
Are karoos good outside Commander?
Generally no — in 60-card formats the tempo loss is too steep. They see occasional play in dedicated lands-matter decks (Amulet Titan in Modern uses Simic Growth Chamber) where the second landfall trigger matters.
